Local Customs

  1. Do not step on the threshold when entering a tent or house. In much of Asia the guardian spirit of the dwelling lives in the threshold.
  2. If you call someone by name add "la" after their name to show respect.
  3. When you sit down be sure that the soles of your feet are not facing anyone. The feet are the lowest part of the body in Buddhist countries and it is extremely disrespectful to place them so that the are towards someone's face.
  4. If anyone gives you a gift, such as a khata, a ceremonial scarf, accept it with both hands, giving a little bow. Hold the gift higher than your head with both hands.
  5. Do not touch, walk over or sit on any religious texts, object or prayer flags in monasteries.
  6. It is discourteous to clap your hands or spit behind anyone in Tibet.
  7. Tibetans stick out their tongue and put their hands palm to palm before their breast to greet you.
  8. ALWAYS WALK AROUND EVERYTHING, MONASTERIES, MANI WALLS, CHORTENS, CLOCKWISE. If you are at a Bon monastery reverse your direction.
  9. Eagles are sacred and should not be disturbed. Cows or sheep with red, green or yellow cloth strips tied to them also should not be disturbed.
