Dingri and Everest
Old Dingri (12,000 feet) is where people, not us, start the trek to Everest Base Camp. A small, typically Tibetan town, it’s a good place to wander around or to walk up to the remains of its old monastery, almost totally demolished in the Cultural Revolution.
We will camp by the Arun River, spend one day wandering the area and another driving to Rongphuk Monastery and Everest Base Camp (15,000 to 16,000) through some of the most astonishing terrain in Tibet.
We will drive out to Nepal through the incredible water-riven abyss, which leads down to Zangmu, the border town with Nepal, seeing for the first time in a month, trees and quite possibly rain to Kathmandu (about the same altitude as Denver.)
